Gertrude Cathrine Henry

She is the Grandmother of Guylene Laney Cox. "Grandma was almost 67 years old when I was born, and to me she always seemed to be old. She was short and had both scoliosis and kyphosis. By the time I was in the 4th grade, I was 4' 10" tall and was taller than Grandma! Her hair was very long and grey and was usually braided and on top of her head or in a bun. Grandma liked for Beverly and Kathy to wash her hair and comb and braid it. If her hair had been dark like my dad's, I could have visualized her as an Indian. Her nose and cheek bones appeared to me to be traits of an American Indian. Her sister Jennie did not look like her, but did look like an American Indian. Grandma loved "sweet cakes" (cookies). She would freqently have Grandpa walk over to Ligey's Grocery Store to buy some. She did not know much about money and could not see well enough to really know what money she had. She could not understand how she never got change when Grandpa went with her dollar, but when she sent Virginia and me, there was always change from the dollar. Grandma gave us girls a card, a handkerchief with a floral design and a dollar bill for our birthdays. I look foreward to that, even when I was in high school. She liked to order little things from the catalog. She had two little plastic rocking horses that sat on the table that I liked to play with. She also had a plactic "Planter's Peanut Man". I remember when she received two armed chairs from a catalog order for her living room. One was blue and the other one red. I always liked them. I now have the "blue" one in my home although it has been reupholstered. Grandma and Grandpa had an ice box to keep their food cold and I remember when they got their first refrigerator.
That was exciting! Of course, I remember the wooden stove in the kitchen, the hand pump for water and the outhouse. It was fun over the years to see Grandma and Grandpa have some luxuries at out house that they never would have dreamed of having."/ Guylene
