Per my father, Ronald J Cox, when the dust bowl hit, Daniel's family wanted to leave for California, but Daniel didn't want to run off like everyone else. However, Daniel got hit by a train, so his family got to do what they wanted and moved on to California. (I'm curious to see if I can find another source on the cause of death. The cause mentioned here may be something of a family folk legend.)
In any case, it's interesting to note that my Coxes were Oakies. Probably not good for scholarships or anything, but it's something I wish I'd known in my history classes when I was learning about the dust bowl.

Have headstone image under the name "Kate C. Cox". "Kate C." was an old family nickname for which nobody seems to know the origin. One of her sons, assuming the 'C' was a middle initial, had it put on the headstone. He was later made to be thoroughly embarrassed over the issue. My mom has more details. Hopefully she'll add them here. (Sean M. Cox)
