""He immigrated with his father and brothers from Chester Co., PA, to Augusta Co., VA, by 1738, the year Augusta Co. was cut out of Orange Co, to Borden's Great Grant in what is now Rockbridge Co. He settled on Kerr Creek, Augusta Co. (the year its records began) as early as 1745, when he witnessed some deeds. On 6 Aug 1753, he witnessed a deed of James Cunningham for 100 acres of land on Tees Creek of James River, cornering the land of Moses Cunningham on 6 Aug 1753 at Augusta Co., VA."

He was reported delinquent on tax levy in 1755 at Augusta Co., VA (Augusta County, VA, Court Orders, Book 5, p. 5).
He sued John Craig in Augusta Co. on 25 Nov 1755 at Augusta Co., VA. He sued John Frazier who lived in Rockingham Co., but the papers were not served because of Indians in 1757 at Augusta Co., VA (Op cit, William C. Stewart, pp. 150-151; and William & Mary Quarterly, 2nd Series, Vol. 3, p. 93).
On 10 Mar 1756, he obtained an 80-acre Virginia patent on a branch of the James River, Kerr (Cunningham) Creek, where he had probably lived for several years, between House Mountain and North Mountain; which was later in Rockbridge Co. at Augusta Co., VA (Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents, by Nell M. Nugent. Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD. Part 6, Patent Book 34, p. 46); and (Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia: Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County, 1745-1800, by Lyman Chalkley. Vol. II, p. 415).
Between 1755 and 1756, CHARLES served in the Augusta Co. militia during the French and Indian war. In Jul 1763, CHARLES was killed by Indians in a raid by Cornstalk's braves on Kerr Creek, on a Sunday morning when most of the inhabitants were away at church (History of Rockbridge County, VA, p. 483; and Op Cit, William C. Stewart, p. 252).
His widow Rebecca was appointed administratrix of his estate; on 20 Mar 1768 she was summoned to give counter security, but the papers were returned on 20 Sep 1763 at Augusta Co., VA (Op cit, Chalkley, Vol. 1, p. 108)."
